Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa: Let’s Begin the Tour

Hanging on the walls of its guest rooms are framed prints which seem to evoke perfectly the ambience of this resort.  They depict a carefree turn-of-the-century moment:  a dazzling white gingerbread fantasy of a hotel sporting a turreted, red-tiled roof.  There’s a sandy beach surrounding a placid water scene with small boats and frolicking children. Ladies stroll in summer gowns and parasols, while fleecy clouds graze in a sky of impossible blue.   Take away the elaborate dress but leave behind that sense of casual formality, and you have Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

Meandering across 40 acres on the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon, this charming property includes a main building and five lodge buildings or “keys,” a spa and health club, a conference and business center, and a wedding chapel.  With many leisure and recreational facilities on the property, Disney’s Grand Floridian is a destination in itself.

Outdoor Pleasures

The spacious and beautiful grounds are one of the great delights of a stay at this resort.  There are manicured lawns, immaculate walkways and topiaried trees.  Geometric beds are densely planted with flowers that change with the seasons. Water sparkles from pools and ponds, fountains and falls, and the lagoon dances with Floridian sunlight during the day and Magic Kingdom fireworks at night.  Guests can choose from a zero-entry feature pool with rock formations, waterslide, and waterfall, or a large courtyard pool with a separate shallow pool for the little ones, and a large spa.  Seasonally, several cabanas are available for morning or afternoon rental periods.

A sandy beach offers lounge chairs with striped sun canopies and magnificent views across the water.   Go for a stroll or a run along the mile-long jogging path or enjoy a game of tennis on the clay courts.  A variety of watercraft, including Sea Raycers and pontoon boats, are available for rental, and arrangements can be made for waterskiing and fishing excursions.

Transportation

As one of the “monorail’ resorts, Disney’s Grand Floridian is conveniently located just one stop away from the Magic Kingdom.  Epcot requires a change of monorail car at the Ticket and Transportation center, and there are regular busses to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney MGM Studios, and Downtown Disney.

Prefer the water?  Walk down to the boat dock and take a pleasant ride to the Magic Kingdom on the canopied launch, which also stops at Disney’s Polynesian Resort.  The Magic Kingdom transportation area also makes an excellent transfer point for traveling to any of the other Walt Disney World resorts.  There is self-parking, as well as valet parking for an additional charge.

You’ve Got a Friend

They cruise the World Showcase Lagoon and ply the waterways of Crescent Lake, offering a welcome sight to park-weary guests emerging from EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  They are Disney’s Friendships; eight boats that ferry their passengers between docks around the World Showcase Lagoon, and make the rounds of Disney’s Boardwalk, Disney’s Yacht and Beach Clubs, the International Gateway at EPCOT, the Swan and Dolphin hotels, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Numbered from I to VIII, each Friendship sports its own distinctive trim colors.  Their design was inspired by European canal and river boats and while the seats may not be planned for comfort, the air-conditioning definitely is!  Generally both stroller- and wheelchair-accessible, adverse wind and water conditions may prevent roll-on boarding.  There will be a sign posted at the landing announcing any changes.

Two boats run routes in the World Showcase Lagoon, one between the landings at the Canada pavilion and the Morocco pavilion, the other making the trip from Mexico to Germany and back.  While not always a time-saver, taking the boat is a pleasant way to enjoy the surroundings and avoid part of the 1.3-mile trek around the lagoon.

It’s a relatively short walk from Disney’s Beach Club Resort to EPCOT; a slightly longer journey from Disney’s Yacht Club or Disney’s Boardwalk Inn and Villas.   A longer walking path leads from the Boardwalk area to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.   Most guests, though, feel they get plenty of exercise during a visit to Walt Disney World and opt to hop a Friendship.  Boats travel between these parks,  stopping at the resorts that surround the lake and canal.

Service typically begins around 8:30 a.m. and runs until approximately one hour after park closings.  If you’re lucky, you may find yourself onboard with the birdman.  His pockets are always filled with treats and the birds seem to know he’s coming; flocking to the dock and approaching him when his boat arrives!

There’s So Much That We Share

I think my son said it best.  Although he had visited Walt Disney World a dozen times with his grandmother, it was my very first trip.  I suggested giving the attraction a pass and he looked at me with horror, “But Mom, we have to do this; It’s A Small World is Disney.”

And so it is.

The cheerful little title tune, the subject of so much whining, is actually thought to be the most widely-performed and translated song in the world.  Yes, it is sung for ten minutes straight, in five different languages by audioanimatronic figures backed up by assorted animals and animated props, as guests float past a variety of scenes representing many world cultures.  But the ride, first created for the New York World’s Fair of 1964, also embodies so much of the Disney tradition and spirit.

Overseen by Walt himself, it was designed by Mary Blair, best known for her murals in the Grand Concourse of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.  It also features the work of other Disney legends: Joyce Carlson, and Marc and Alice Davis.  The original attraction found a home in Disneyland but it has been recreated for Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland.

The exquisitely-detailed costumes alone are worth the voyage over the Seven Seaways.  Small children, dressed to evoke their native lands, bounce and twist to the ever-present music.  It is charming and colorful, promoting a message of goodwill and unity – and, let’s be honest, every vacation can generally use a dash of goodwill and unity!
